KARL STORZ has expanded its range of products with the addition of an efficient lithotripsy unit for crushing calculi. The CALCUSPLIT® is a new unit for effective crushing of calculi with minimum patient discomfort.

How it functions:

CALCUSPLIT® is based on the familiar direct impact principle, i.e. kinetic energy of a bolt is transmitted to the proximal end-piece of the intracorporeal probe via an elastic pulse. The pulse movement of the distal section of the probe fragments the calculus, with which it is in contact.

The CALCUSPLIT® system differs from other direct impact systems in that movement of the bolt and the deflection of the probe are not axial to each other. The kinetic energy of the bolt is transmitted to the probe via a special transformation element. In this way the force is increased and, furthermore, precise adjustment of the probe deflection is ensured.

Advantages:

• Handpiece and application probe have no live components. This ensures that there is no electrical hazard whatsoever for patient or user.
• Energy transmission is purely mechanical. The efficiency of the system is therefore very high and ensures effective fragmentation.
• The average energy transmitted to the calculus is relatively small owing to the low pulse frequence of 15 Hz. This fact, together with the optimum energy transmission, means that there is no significant increase in the temperature of either probe or handpiece.
• The smallest probe diameter is 0.8 mm. Consequently, there is sufficient lumen for efficient irrigation and optimum endoscopic vision.

CALCUSPLIT® is very simple to use. The handpiece and the probe are very easy to disassemble for cleaning purposes. The system is compatible with existing instruments for treatment of urinary, renal and cystic calculi.
