Low power – under 30 watts – for office or minor procedures
- Neurosurgery (bipolar and monopolar)
- Laparoscopic sterilization (bipolar and monopolar)
- Vasectomies
- Dermatology
- Oral surgery
- Plastic surgery
If the power setting isn’t known from personal experience, the generator should be set at a very low setting and power cautiously increased until the desired effect is achieved.

Medium power – coag 30-70 watts, cut 30-150 watts – major OR
- General surgery
- Laparotomies
- Head and neck surgery (ENT)
- Major orthopedic surgery
- Major vascular surgery
- Routine thoracic surgery
- Polypectomy
High power – coag over 70 watts, cut over 150 watts – major OR
- Transurethral resections (cut 120-300 watts, coag 50-120 watts, depending on the thickness of the resection loop and the technique of the surgeon)
- Thoracotomies (heavy fulguration, 70-120 watts)
- Ablative cancer surgery, mastectomies, etc. (cut 180-300 watts, coag 70-120 watts)
